Common Questions
What is the "100-word" or "consumer statement" on my credit report?
There is a space on the report for you to challenge or explain, in 100 words or less, any credit entry in your file. You must use caution when making a statement since it will become part of your permanent credit history. If you make a statement explaining why your credit is bad, you are confirming that your negative credit is accurate. However, if you are a victim of identity theft or have suffered a catastrophic event, the statement may work in your favor by evoking sympathy by those who are reviewing your credit.
Another issue to be aware of is that credit bureaus have been known to shorten or change statements. Just make sure it is 100 words or less and that it is recorded exactly the way you wanted.
